S&ME is looking for a motivated and passionate Geotechnical Staff Engineer to join our team in Greensboro, North Carolina. This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer in training to grow as an engineer with the support of project engineers/managers, senior engineers, and office leadership. As a Geotechnical Staff Engineer, you are at the foundation of our subsurface exploration and drilling operations in support of the infrastructure-building phase for our clients. While working under the supervision of a Licensed Engineer, together you will provide engineering solutions and recommendations as well as supporting our clients in their development initiatives such as:

  • Pavements, water and wastewater infrastructure, private and public buildings, including higher education, healthcare, and industrial structures, renewable energy systems (i.e Solar Farms, Battery Storage Facilities, etc.), fossil fuel power generation power, transmission systems, and more.

Your Day-to-Day:

As the professional representative of S&ME on the project site, you should feel comfortable interacting with clients, construction personnel, and subcontractors. Your training and expertise will play a crucial role in influencing the project's success and offering effective solutions to our clients. This role includes performing technical geotechnical analyses and writing reports, as well as fieldwork.

  • Field Operations Coordination: Coordinating field exploration and drilling operations.
  • Soil Sample Collection and Logging: Collecting and logging soil samples from the field.
  • Solar Pile Load Testing: Working with a field team performing foundation load testing for solar energy facilities.
  • Soil Testing and Analysis: Testing, analyzing, evaluating, and performing calculations to evaluate the behavior of the subsurface conditions relative to development.
  • Report Preparation: Preparing written reports with findings and geotechnical opinions, conclusions, and recommendations.

This position will require working outside in varying weather conditions based on project needs, lifting and carrying 40-50lbs of field and lab samples/equipment, as well as working outside normal business hours with potential overnight travel.


What You Bring:

  • A Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering, Mining, or a related ABET-accredited engineering field
  • 0-2 years of professional experience
  • Excellent computer skills including at a minimum, Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, AutoCAD, and other commercial software applications can be taught on the job as needed
  • An Engineering Intern (EIT) certification, or the intention of becoming an EIT shortly after hire
