This position will have responsibilities in Oklahoma and New Mexico. Location for the selected person is flexible within this territory. Offices are located in Albuquerque, Tulsa, and Oklahoma City.
The American Indian Health Initiatives Director will serve the states of New Mexico and Oklahoma to identify and implement creative solutions to deal with the distinct issues American Indians confront when dealing with cardiovascular disease. An initial priority will be to understand the influence of tribal government on health, the role of socio-economic status; and the importance of culturally appropriate outreach, education and treatment options. Solutions will involve developing key alliances with state, federal and community organizations as well implementation of American Heart Association's culturally appropriate programs, awareness campaigns, messaging, working with collaborators and community-based organizations, and cross-functional integration of Minority Health Initiatives into other AHA initiatives.
Responsibilities include:
Build alliances with community stakeholders including but not limited to tribal governments, lay health educators, state and federal agencies, corporate partners, and key community social organizations
' ' Review and synthesize information on relevant American Indian Health initiatives launched by tribes, pueblos, federal agencies, or other affiliates.
' Assess the cultural relevance and appropriateness of current AHA materials targeted toward American Indians/Alaska Natives and modify to appeal to American Indian/Alaska Native
' With input from stakeholders, develop a comprehensive intervention plan for the American Indian community.
' Align traditional AHA programs such with American Indian/Alaska Native focused programs such as Honoring the Gift of Heart
' Expand Go Red for Women Campaign to the American Indian Alaska/Native community.
' Plan and organize volunteers and direct program operations
' Manage planning, marketing, implementation, and evaluation of programs and special events
' Staff appropriate committees and all subcommittees
' Recruit, train, and effectively utilize volunteers to carry out program components using Train the Trainer practices to expand programs
' Serve as component liaison for National, Affiliate and local staff and volunteers
' Develop community-based and inter-departmental collaborations to increase program funding, outreach, and impact
' Monitor and evaluate overall program budget
Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent experience. Minimum three years experience in the implementation of community based programs/initiatives and/or community mobilization.
Extensive experience in working with American Indian communities.
Ability to work evenings and weekends when necessary and to travel daily within the assigned territory with some overnight travel.
